Discover new interests or refine old talents with over 100 FREE workshops for adults (19+)

South Devon College are excited to host the Festival of Learning across our campuses. It’s a great opportunity for you to gain new skills or develop existing ones for free!

Discover five days filled with over 100 three-to-five hour workshops developing skills in a whole range of areas, from new hobbies and crafts, to professional skills and trades; from jewellery making and plastering to developing your management skills to improve your prospects at work!

Our workshops vary between being online and taking place across our Paignton and Torquay campuses to utilise the incredible facilities we have, such as our Hi Tech & Digital Centre, Animal Unit, and Health Care suites. The addresses for each of the locations are below.

Learn how to use your sewing machine. You will need to bring your own sewing machine, leads, attachments and manual. Please also bring some plain fabric, thread and scissors

Introduction to Bricklaying – College, Paignton

This workshop will cover the basics of brickwork. You will be introduced to basic techniques through discussion and demonstration, you will then have an opportunity to practice these skills by building a wall. All tools will be supplied, you will need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, no open toe shoes/sandals.

Introduction to Teaching – UCSD, Paignton

The intent of this course is to support you to develop confidence in delivering training sessions. Mindful Mandala Workshop – College, Paignton

Mandala, a circular figure representing the universe in Hindu and Buddhist symbolism, are a soothing and creative outlet. Using varied materials such as paint and pens you will make different patterns and designs following geometric circles. With a finished design set on a wooden disc.

Taking time to be mindful of yourself and your feelings is vitally important. Creative art naturally shifts your attention away from life’s problems.

This presentation identifies effective online search techniques, how to differentiate between primary and secondary sources, and helps to develop your critical thinking skills so that you  are able to critically evaluate research sources and locate legitimate information.

Introduction to Video Editing – College, Paignton

This practical workshop will cover tips for capturing your videos, software layout, setting up new projects, basic editing techniques and keyboard shortcuts, transitions, working with audio and exporting your finished film. By the end of the workshop participants will have built confidence and knowledge in the use of basic editing skills that will allow them to create and deliver their films.

Machine Applique – College, Paignton

Come and learn how to create beautiful applique using your sewing machine. You will need to bring your own sewing machine. There will be a choice of patterns and fabrics available.

Paint Yourself Calm Watercolour Workshop – College, Paignton

This fresh approach looks first at the process of painting as a means to calm and de-stress. Many people love the idea of painting but hold themselves back from starting because they are worried about not being good enough or not feeling they are creative. watercolour is accessible to everyone, in this workshop we will be painting very simple lines, patterns, and shapes in calming or dynamic colours, concentrating on each brush stroke. This can have a powerful meditative effect and allows everyone a chance to experience watercolour painting.

Resilience, Social Skills and Confidence – UCSD, Paignton

This bite-sized course provides the knowledge to support you to understand why it is important to work on behaviour, emotional and social development. To do this this involves understanding the influences impacting on behaviour, emotional and social skills and how improving on self-reliance and self-esteem impacts on how effective you are as a leader.
