Our public services students recently travelled to Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, Canada, on a trip designed to broaden their understanding of history, conservation and the skills needed for careers in the uniformed and public services.
Fifteen students from the college’s public services spent sixteen days in the region, taking part in a programme that combined archaeology, environmental conservation and outdoor challenges.
Students explored archaeology and the history of Nova Scotia, gaining an insight into the people, communities and events that have shaped the region. They learned about the importance of preserving archaeological sites and protecting cultural heritage for future generations.
The group also took part in environmental restoration work, carrying timber along a riverside in a woodland setting for use in a natural restoration project. In Cape Breton, students helped install natural features in a shallow river designed to support healthy freshwater ecosystems, gaining first-hand experience of habitat management and conservation.
Students experienced the unique natural environment of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, developing a greater appreciation for the relationship between people, communities and the environment.
The trip provided opportunities to develop teamwork, leadership, resilience, communication and problem-solving skills through practical and outdoor experiences. Students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and build confidence, independence and adaptability.

Scott Rowe, Trainer Facilitator for Public Services at the college, said: “The trip to Nova Scotia has been an incredible experience for our students and staff. It has been fantastic to see the students challenge themselves, embrace new experiences and develop their confidence, resilience and independence.
“From exploring the region’s archaeology and history to learning about natural restoration and conservation, the trip has given students a much broader perspective on the world around them. For me, the most rewarding part has been seeing the students grow throughout the trip.
“Experiences like this are about so much more than visiting another country; they give young people the opportunity to discover what they are capable of, challenge themselves and return home with a real sense of achievement. We are incredibly proud of how they have represented South Devon College.”
Lukas, a Public Services student, said: “Everyone who led our activities with Parks Canada was great. They all had incredible knowledge of their roles and the environment, and how we were helping them. Getting to put up the Tipi and meet the Indigenous Mi’kmaq was awesome.”
Todd, another student on the trip, added: “It’s a very rare experience, and you’d be more than lucky to be selected to take part. So many brilliant experiences were put together by Parks Canada. None of this would have been possible without them.”
The experience connected closely with the values and skills required for careers in the uniformed services and wider public service, while giving students a broader understanding of the world around them.

Trips like this would not be possible without funding from the Turing Scheme, and we want to extend our thanks to them for providing this experience for our students.
