Uniform

We want pupils to take pride in their appearance, and we believe that uniform can help portray a positive student image and a shared culture around school. We also recognise that strict traditional uniform can present a barrier to some learners, particularly in a college environment, and that pupils and parents also tell us that they prefer a more relaxed approach to school uniform.

Our “official” South Devon High School uniform consists of a polo shirt or hoodie, however at South Devon High School students may wear their own clothes and are not required to wear their uniform at all times, in all lessons, or in and around the college at break times. We ask students to wear uniform when it is appropriate to do so, and guidance will be given to pupils and parents, for example on employer visits or trips, during specific curriculum related activities specified by teachers, or on other occasions when representing the High School.

Students who choose to wear their own must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Clothes must not display offensive or inappropriate writing, slogans or images
  • Excessive exposure of flesh is to be avoided.
  • In the event of dispute, it will remain the School’s decision on the appropriateness of clothing.

The following items are not permitted as part of pupils’ uniform:

  • Crop tops, Low cut tops, Bralette without an additional appropriate top
  • Leggings on their own (permitted with shorts/skirts)
  • Mini-skirts, mini dress or similar
  • No open shirts without a top underneath
  • Excessive jewellery, for example that which could pose a health or safety risk, which pupils will be asked to remove. South Devon High School is not responsible for any loss of jewellery worn to school, or for any injury sustained by a pupil caused by the wearing of jewellery.

For Activity and Wellbeing (PE) sessions there will be no prescribed uniform. This is designed to make students feel more comfortable in the sessions. Clothing should be appropriate for the activity and not pose a health or safety risk. Jeans will not be permitted and appropriate footwear must be worn, for example trainers or plimsolls.  Jewellery will be asked to remove when participating in core PE activity

Some subjects, for example Hospitality and Catering, Animal Care, Childcare, Engineering, do have their own individual uniform requirements which have been agreed with the School, often for health and safety reasons. Pupils should comply with the individual uniform requirements outlined in each subject.
