South Devon College Governing Body South Devon College’s governing body is referred to as the Board, who are collectively responsible for the strategic direction of the college. This includes monitoring effective and efficient use of finances and resources and acting as a critical friend to the senior leadership team who lead the operational management of the college.
The Governor Role
Governors enact the above responsibilities in several ways:
| Attending meetings Board meetings cover a wide variety of topics; strategy, educational quality, financial management, audit and risk, all with a view to supporting the strategic direction of the college. | Acting as the critical friend In meetings, governors support the senior team by detailed reading of board meeting papers, asking questions and challenging where needed. They model the Nolan Principals and have oversight of ethical standards and inclusivity in the organisation. |
| Lead Roles Governors can hold a specific portfolio of interest or expertise to support the college strategy. These include safeguarding, sustainability, further/higher education and SEND, to name a few. | Governor visits Coming in not only for meetings, but to triangulate the information reported in meetings by the senior team and meet with learners, staff and key stakeholders, building that bigger picture of the South Devon College community. |
| Commitment As you can imagine, there is a commitment to being a governor, not least time. Over a four-year term of office, governors need to prepare for meetings, reading papers and preparing any questions they may have, attend regular termly meetings, attend two strategic planning meetings and engage with governor visits. This equates one day a month (60-80 hrs a year). | Safeguarding Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and is key to South Devon College, where the student at the heart of everything. Governors must commit to undertaking an Enhanced DBS check as a condition of the role. |
What do you need to be a governor at South Devon College?

- An ability to apply critical thinking, previous experience and knowledge to matters as they arise;
- An area of expertise that will contribute to the skill set of the board;
- To balance support and effective challenge, contributing to board discussions transparently and fairly;
- A willingness to triangulate information from sources outside of meetings.
