South Devon College Marine Academy offers a range of Seafish-approved short courses for skippers and crew

Who are Seafish?

Seafish is a public body supporting the UK seafood sector to thrive, working with South Devon College as an approved provider to offer training courses for people working in the fishing industry, to ensure a skilled and safe workforce. 

Seafish works with the seafood industry right across the UK, from fishing vessels and their crew, seafood processing businesses, and aquaculture producers, to restaurants and fishmongers. 

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is responsible for enforcing regulations around safety on fishing vessels, and certain safety training courses are mandatory for workers in the industry and must be completed before going to sea.

Funding is available to cover course costs via Seafish. If you’re interested in completing a course, please submit an enquiry and we will coordinate a meeting with Seafish to enable you to secure this funding.

Seafish Under 16.5m Skipper’s Certificate courses available

Seafish Under 16.5m Skipper’s Certificates are recognised by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency for use on Small Commercial Vessels – Access the Marine Guidance Note (MGN) 411 documentation for details.

If you apply for a Seafish course through the college, you will be charged the full rate. There may be funding available to you from Seafish. If you think this might be the case, please contact Seafish before making your application.
