The Sixth Form Hub at South Devon College officially opened on Monday 28th September, with current sixth form students cutting the ribbon in front of a crowd of fellow students and staff.
The morning was bustling, with current and new students coming to take a look at the new provision. Students explored the space, caught up with friends and spoke with tutors about how they could make the most of the Hub during their studies.
Samuel Lawrence-Ball, who is currently studying A Levels, said: “I love the new hub, it’s quiet and a lovely place to study with a really calm atmosphere.”

Principal Laurence Frewin spoke at the opening, telling the gathered students and staff: “Sixth form is about more than what happens in the classroom. It’s also a time when students are becoming more independent and preparing for whatever comes next, whether that’s university, an apprenticeship or employment. This Hub gives them a dedicated space where they can take ownership of their time, work independently and learn alongside each other. It is fantastic to see students making use of it straight away.”
Afterwards, pastries, cakes, tea and coffee were served and the Hub quickly filled up, with students starting games of chess, settling into the booth seats and chatting in groups. It didn’t take long for the new space to start feeling lived in, with students already finding their favourite places to sit, study and spend time between lessons.
That mix of conversation, games and quiet corners is exactly what the Hub is there for. Whether your next step is university or the workplace, you’ll need to know how to make good use of your own time. The Hub gives students a place to practise that independence: settling into a booth when they need to concentrate, or pulling up a seat with friends when a project needs more than one head.
It also gives sixth form students a place of their own within the wider College, bringing together students studying different subjects who may not otherwise cross paths during the day. Between lessons, it can be somewhere to get ahead with coursework, ask for support or simply take a break before the next class.
For students beginning to think about life after sixth form, that independence matters. Knowing when you need to concentrate on your own, when to ask for help and when it’s better to work with other people are skills that will be useful long after sixth form.

For anyone considering sixth form as their next step, there’s a chance to experience it for yourself this October. South Devon College’s Sixth Form Experience Day takes place on Thursday 29th October, from 10am to 2pm, giving prospective students the opportunity to experience sixth form life, explore the College and get a feel for where their next step could take them.
