Access to Higher Education Diploma (Science) Biology and Chemistry

Access to Higher Education Diploma (Science) Biology and Chemistry

If you're aged 19+ and ready to take the next step towards a degree in the sciences, the Access to Higher Education Diploma (Science) – Biology and Chemistry Pathway is your route to university and beyond. Whether you're interested in Microbiology, Genetics, Biomedicine or Chemistry, this course provides the UCAS points and academic grounding you need to pursue a wide range of science and healthcare-related degrees across the UK.

This diploma is also ideal if you're aiming for competitive degrees such as Midwifery, Paramedic Science, Physiotherapy, or Dietetics, where a solid understanding of biology and chemistry is essential. You’ll study these core sciences alongside dedicated study skills support to help you thrive at higher education level.

To enrol, you’ll typically need a grade 4 (or C) in GCSE English and Maths—or a recognised Level 2 Functional Skills qualification, depending on your chosen university’s requirements. It’s also recommended that you have a clear idea of the degree you’d like to pursue, as each university may have specific entry criteria.

For added flexibility, this pathway is also available part-time—one day a week over two years. If your interests lie in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, or you’re thinking of a career in engineering or medical sciences, you may want to explore our alternative Access to HE pathways.

The course is accredited by AIM Qualifications and Assessment Group, and you may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover tuition fees. If you go on to complete a university degree, this loan won’t need to be repaid.

After successful completion, you’ll have the opportunity to progress onto one of the approved Foundation Degrees at University Centre South Devon, including:

FdSc Animal Science

FdSc Assistant Practitioner

FdSc Nursing Associate

FdSc Hearing Aid Audiology
