Launching Marine Careers from the River Dart

Standing beside boats at a marina

South Devon College plays a vital role in training the next generation of workforces in a wide variety of sectors and, as the College is sited in the marine location of Torbay, training the up-and-coming maritime specialists is a top priority.

The College’s Marine Academy is based on the banks of the River Dart and is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and hi-tech kit, training students in all different maritime disciplines, from engineering and fisher apprentices to professional RYA and Seafish-backed qualifications.

In this case study we talk to Felix Baker-Kind, 17, who is studying the Level 2 Marine Engineering qualification at the Marine Academy at Noss on Dart.

What course are you enrolled on

I am studying a Level 2 Marine Engineering Diploma.

Why did you choose that subject?

I have always enjoyed watersports and have grown up using my family’s boat on the estuaries and ocean around South Devon.

I like exploring how things work and enjoy working with mechanical components and have always wanted to work in the marine industry.

What is your background?

I obtained 8 GCSEs at school but decided that the A Level route wasn’t for me, as I wanted to gain a practical qualification that would allow me to develop practical skills and lead to a specific career.

I took my Powerboat II qualification a few years ago, as I wanted to be prepared for working in the marine industry.

Are you enjoying your time at South Devon College?

I am! The Marine Academy has good facilities and all the staff are friendly and supportive. We also get to go out on the College boats frequently and drive them on the estuary which is fun!

What are your favourite aspects of the course?

I really enjoy the practical workshop activities such as stripping the engines and changing the oil.

We also have classroom study time to learn the theory behind the practical and to complete assignments.

What are your thoughts on the facilities at South Devon College?

I am gaining experience on different types of engines, from diesel inboards to petrol outboards. The workshop has all the necessary equipment to strip the engines and practice all the required servicing.

The Marine Academy is in a great location at Noss – there is direct access to the water and there are other related businesses on site.

What are your plans for the future?

I am looking to start a Level 3 Marine Engineering apprenticeship in September, so I can develop my knowledge further and gain more skills and experience whilst earning a wage.

Eventually I am interested in working in the superyacht industry.
