Gas Engineering Operative Apprenticeship
This occupation is found within the construction sector, supporting the continued provision of installation and maintaining gas-fuelled heating and hot water systems across the UK.
The broad purpose of this occupation is to safely install, commission, decommission, carry out scheduled maintenance and repairs of gas appliances and equipment in a domestic dwelling. Appliances can include, but are not limited to, a range of work categories such as central heating boilers, ducted air heaters, cookers, space heaters and gas metering equipment. Roles in gas engineering are physical in nature and may involve lifting and moving of equipment, working at height and in confined spaces. All operatives must be registered on the Gas Safe Register for each appliance in which they are competent to undertake work on.
Gas Engineering Operatives are responsible for ensuring customer safety and always providing service excellence. Operatives will be required to explain how gas installations are designed and how appliances and controls operate, providing energy efficiency advice to customers as an integral part of the role.

You need an apprenticeship with an employer to enrol onto the course. Please note that some of our apprenticeship programmes have minimum entry requirements, particularly regarding English and maths, as set out by Skills England and funding rules.
Gas safety principles and legislation:You will learn how to work safely with gas, including Gas Safety (installation and use) Regulations, risk assessments, safe isolation, ventilation requirements and compliance with industry standards.
Combustion, flueing and properties of gas:This includes understanding how gas burns, how to check combustion performance, characteristics of natural gas/LPG, and how flue systems operate and must be maintained.
Installation, commissioning, servicing and maintenance of gas appliances:You will develop skills to install, commission, service and repair appliances such as boilers, space heaters, cookers.
Tightness testing, purging and pipework procedures:This covers tightness testing, purging, pressure testing, pipework sizing and design, and ensuring systems are safe and leak?free before and after work.
Scientific principles and heating system theory:You will learn the underlying science behind heat transfer, energy efficiency, building structures, heating system design, and how different system components work together.
Customer service and communication skills:The standard requires you to explain appliance operation, efficiency advice, safety information and system design to customers professionally and clearly.
