History

History

History isn’t just about dates and events - it’s about understanding how the past has shaped the world we live in today. A Level History at South Devon College offers you the chance to explore powerful stories, challenge perspectives, and engage in meaningful debate as you examine two major periods of change and transformation.

Over the two-year course, you’ll study The Tudors (1485–1603) and The American Dream (1945–1980) - two fascinating modules that explore power, politics and the people who shaped history. From the dramatic reigns of Tudor monarchs to the rise of the United States as a global superpower, you’ll gain insight into key developments and deepen your understanding of political, social and cultural change.

Lessons are interactive and varied, with opportunities for discussion, debate, research and creative assessments. Whether you're writing analytical essays, creating historical memes, presenting your ideas, or using digital platforms like Google Classroom, you’ll develop a wide range of academic and transferable skills.

Assessment includes two exams (worth 40% each) and a coursework essay (20%). The coursework gives you the chance to research a historical topic of your choice and produce a 4,000-word essay - an excellent way to explore your interests and prepare for university-level study.

A Level History is a respected subject that opens the door to a variety of degree courses and careers. Many students go on to study history or related subjects at university, leading to careers in research, teaching, politics, the media, law, the civil service, and the heritage or museum sectors.
