Health and Social Care - Technical Extended Diploma

If you're passionate about making a difference in the lives of others and want to build a career in the health or social care sector, the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care at South Devon College gives you the essential skills, confidence, and qualifications to succeed.

Throughout the course, you’ll explore key topics such as human growth and development, health and wellbeing, communication, safeguarding, and the values and ethics of care. You’ll also develop transferable academic and professional skills through a variety of engaging, real-world assessments including reports, essays, digital projects and presentations.

A key feature of this course is up to 200 hours of vocational work placement each year, with a NHS block placements in year 2. These placements provide invaluable practical experience and help prepare you for a wide range of roles within the sector. You’ll also benefit from access to our fully equipped clinical skills suite, where you’ll take part in realistic health and care scenarios led by healthcare professionals. In year 2, students can apply for a chance to take part in an international work placement trip funded by the Turing Scheme. In 2026, a group of students will travel to Vietnam to gain valuable experience working at a centre supporting adults and children with physical and learning disabilities.

Assessment is both internal and external, including controlled assessments and an Anatomy and Physiology exam in the final year. You’ll be supported throughout by expert tutors and have the opportunity to engage with local employers who can help connect you with part-time work and future career opportunities.

By completing the two-year programme, you can achieve up to 168 UCAS points, opening progression routes into university-level study, either at University Centre South Devon or across the UK. Future pathways include careers in nursing, midwifery, paramedicine, occupational therapy, social work, podiatry, and many more.
