Geography

Geography

Geography is the study of the world around us - how it’s shaped, how it’s changing, and how humans interact with the environment. A Level Geography at South Devon College is a dynamic and thought-provoking course that brings together the key issues of our time, from climate change and natural hazards to urban development and global inequality.

Over two years, you’ll explore six fascinating modules covering both physical and human geography, always with a focus on real-world examples. You’ll investigate topics such as coasts, ecosystems, hazards and resource management, alongside population, global systems and urban environments. From analysing the powerful Super-typhoon Haiyan to understanding the geological processes that shaped Torbay, you'll study a wide range of case studies that connect local and global issues.

Fieldwork is an essential and exciting part of the course. You’ll take part in visits to locations such as Dorset’s iconic Jurassic Coast - exploring sites like Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove - where you’ll see geography in action. These experiences help bring your classroom learning to life and support your independent investigation.

The coursework element gives you the opportunity to choose your own geographical question and carry out a detailed study on a topic that interests you most. This research project will culminate in a 4,000-word report and is a great way to develop independent learning, analytical and report-writing skills.

A Level Geography is highly valued by universities and employers, and can lead to careers in environmental science, urban planning, sustainability, geopolitics, international development, teaching and beyond.
