Chemistry
Chemistry helps us understand the world on a molecular level - how substances interact, how energy changes and how materials are created and transformed. It plays a vital role in medicine, industry, energy, and the environment.
A Level Chemistry at South Devon College gives you the opportunity to explore this fascinating subject in depth. You’ll work in well-equipped laboratories alongside fully qualified chemists with real-world industrial experience, learning through a combination of research, experimentation and guided theory.
In your first year, you’ll build a strong foundation by studying atomic structure, bonding, the periodic table, energy changes and core organic chemistry. In the second year, you’ll extend your understanding with topics such as physical chemistry, transition elements, more advanced organic chemistry, and a range of analytical techniques used in modern labs.
Practical work is an essential part of the course. You’ll develop your laboratory skills throughout, working towards the practical endorsement, a key part of the qualification and excellent preparation for university-level science. You’ll also gain confidence tackling exam questions based on practical scenarios, which make up around 15% of your final assessment.
Delivered in partnership with AQA, A Level Chemistry opens doors to an exciting range of degree and career options including medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacy, pharmacology, forensic science, chemical engineering and environmental science.
You can also continue your journey right here at University Centre South Devon, where foundation degrees in Biosciences and Animal Science offer excellent progression routes.
