Marine Engineer Apprenticeship
Marine Engineer Apprenticeship
Marine Engineering apprentices work on a variety of vessels including yachts, motorboats, workboats, commercial ships, and superyachts. They gain practical skills in installing, maintaining, fault finding, and repairing marine engines, ancillary systems, and equipment. Apprentices also learn about vessel design and develop solutions to accommodate boat layouts, restrictions, and engineering requirements, or create marine engineering systems from technical drawings and specifications.
They are trained to work to fine tolerances using a range of measuring equipment, machines, and tools, mastering the manufacturing, assembly, stripping, repair, and rebuilding of components. Apprentices learn the importance of complying with organisational and statutory health & safety regulations, sustainability standards, and working independently with minimal supervision. Communication and problem-solving skills are emphasised throughout their training.
Marine Engineering apprentices become proficient in commissioning and testing boat systems, maintaining high standards of quality and accuracy. Their role often includes participation in sea trials. They frequently collaborate with associated trades such as Boatbuilders and Marine Electricians, developing a strong understanding of the marine industry. Upon successful completion, apprentices will be highly skilled and adaptable to the evolving complexities of modern boats.
This Level 3 apprenticeship lasts for four years. Apprentices attend College one day per week, spending the remaining time working a minimum of 30 hours per week in the workplace. Prospective apprentices are encouraged to seek employers offering apprenticeship opportunities, though the College provides support in finding suitable placements.
