Hairdressing (Adults) Diploma

Hairdressing (Adults) Diploma

Thinking about a career in hairdressing but not sure where to start? The Level 1 Diploma in an Introduction to the Hairdressing Sector at South Devon College is the perfect first step.

Designed for adult learners, this course gives you a hands-on introduction to the hair industry while building your confidence and skills. You’ll complete 10 units, each combining practical training with theory, to give you a solid foundation in key salon techniques. You’ll learn how to shampoo and condition hair, style both women’s and men’s hair, create hair-up looks for special occasions, and explore setting, plaiting, consultation, health and safety, and reception duties.

You’ll also get an early introduction to colouring and cutting — ideal preparation for progressing on to the Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing. As part of your experience, you’ll take part in inspiring workshops, hear from guest speakers, and have the chance to attend exhibitions and industry events.

What you'll learn:

Shampooing and conditioning techniques

Styling women’s and men’s hair

Hair-up styles for all occasions

Plaiting and setting hair

Health and safety in the salon

Reception and client consultation skills

Introductory cutting and colouring.

Assessment methods:

You’ll be assessed through practical tasks in the salon, written assignments, and online tests.

What you’ll need:

Hairdressing kit (to be purchased – details provided at interview)

Uniform: Smart black clothing with black, comfortable, closed-toe and closed-heel shoes

Funding support available:

If you're aged 19 or over and have been a UK resident for at least three years (excluding those in devolved education areas or apprenticeships), you may be eligible for financial support. Your individual circumstances will be considered, and support could include help with course fees, travel, equipment, and more.
