Sociology
If you're curious about how society shapes who we are – from our identities to our opportunities in life – A Level Sociology at South Devon College offers a powerful lens through which to explore the world around you. This course invites you to investigate how social class, gender, ethnicity, and other structures influence behaviour, life chances, and the way we see ourselves and others.
Over two years, you’ll study four fascinating modules: Families and Households, Education with Research Methods, Beliefs in Society, and Crime and Deviance. Throughout the course, you’ll apply key sociological theories and analyse real-world data to explore how individuals and groups interact with wider social systems.
Learning is brought to life through discussions, debates, and group research projects that encourage you to think critically and challenge assumptions. You’ll be expected to engage in regular reading and essay writing, building your ability to evaluate different perspectives and construct well-reasoned arguments.
Sociology is ideal for students who enjoy analysing complex issues and expressing ideas in writing. It’s especially valuable for those interested in careers where understanding people and society is essential, such as teaching, social work, policing, human resources, nursing, or community development. It also opens doors to roles in social policy and research.
Many of our students go on to study Sociology or related social sciences at university, equipped with the analytical skills and curiosity to make a real impact in the world.
