If you are curious about how science shapes the world around us and want to develop the skills needed for a future in science or healthcare, the AAQ National Certificate in Applied Science is an excellent choice. Developed in collaboration with universities and employers, this exciting qualification is equivalent to a full A Level and carries the same UCAS points, helping you prepare for higher education and a wide range of scientific careers.

At South Devon College, you will explore the fascinating principles behind Biology, Chemistry and Physics while building the practical skills that employers and universities value. The course is designed to help you understand how scientific knowledge is applied in real-world settings, making learning engaging, relevant and inspiring.

You will study three units each year, with the opportunity to achieve a Certificate equivalent to an AS Level at the end of Year 1 and progress to an Extended Certificate, equivalent to a full A Level, at the end of Year 2. Assessment includes one externally assessed exam unit each year alongside coursework projects that allow you to demonstrate your skills and knowledge through practical application.

A strong focus on hands-on learning runs throughout the course. In Year 1, you will investigate topics across Biology, Chemistry and Physics while developing valuable research skills through a self-directed project supported by experienced lecturers. In Year 2, you will examine the impact of science on society, explore how scientists communicate important information to the public and decision-makers, and study areas such as analytical chemistry and environmental science.

This Applied Science qualification is ideal alongside subjects such as Psychology, Mathematics, Geography or a single science. It provides a strong foundation for progression to university courses in science, healthcare science, environmental science, biomedical science and related fields.
