Applied Health and Social Care
If you are interested in making a positive difference to people's lives and want to develop a deeper understanding of health, wellbeing and care, the Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care is an excellent choice. This qualification will help you build the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed for progression to higher education and future careers within the health and social care sector.
At South Devon College, you will explore a wide range of topics that reflect the challenges and opportunities within modern health and social care settings. You will develop an understanding of equality, diversity and rights, learning how inclusive practice helps ensure that every individual receives high-quality care and support. You will also study health and safety principles and discover how professionals work to protect the wellbeing of those in their care.
A key part of the course focuses on anatomy and physiology, helping you understand how the human body functions and how different body systems work together. Alongside this, you will explore person-centred approaches to care, learning how health and social care professionals place the needs, wishes and preferences of individuals at the centre of decision-making.
You will examine important topics including mental health, long-term physiological conditions, public health strategies, sexual health, nutrition and healthy lifestyles. These areas will help you develop a broad understanding of the factors that influence health and wellbeing across different communities and age groups.
Throughout the course, you will apply your knowledge to realistic scenarios, develop your research and analytical skills, and build confidence in communicating effectively about complex health and social care issues. The qualification is assessed through a combination of examinations and non-exam assessments, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate both your academic knowledge and practical understanding.
This course provides an excellent foundation for progression to university-level study in areas such as nursing, midwifery, paramedic science, social work, occupational therapy, public health and other related subjects. It can also support future careers across healthcare, social care and community support services.
