Applied Education and Early Years

Applied Education and Early Years

If you are passionate about working with young children and want to understand how they grow, learn and develop, the AAQ in Early Childhood Development is an excellent place to start. This A Level equivalent qualification will give you a strong foundation in child development while helping you build the skills and knowledge needed for further study and future careers in the early years sector.

At South Devon College, you will explore how babies and young children develop physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually from birth through to early childhood. You will gain insight into the factors that influence development and discover how early years professionals create environments that help children thrive, learn and reach their full potential.

You will investigate the importance of play in children's learning and development, examining how play supports communication, creativity, confidence and problem-solving skills. You will also explore how young children express themselves and interact with the world around them, helping you develop a deeper understanding of their needs and experiences.

Throughout the course, you will study real-life scenarios and current issues affecting children, families and early years settings. Learning is engaging, interactive and designed to help you connect theory with practice. You will develop valuable transferable skills including communication, research, organisation, critical thinking and reflective practice, all of which are highly valued by universities and employers.

Assessment is through a combination of externally assessed examinations and coursework, allowing you to demonstrate both your academic understanding and your ability to apply knowledge in practical contexts.

This qualification provides an excellent pathway to higher education and careers related to early childhood development, education, childcare, health and social care, psychology and family support services. Whether you aspire to become an early years practitioner, primary school teacher, educational psychologist, family support worker or childcare professional, this course will help you take the first step towards a rewarding career supporting young children to achieve the best possible start in life.
