Funding options for Adults

Investing in your future has never been more accessible. At South Devon College, we believe that cost should never be a barrier to your education. That’s why a wide range of financial support options are available to help adults fund their studies – whether you’re looking to upskill, change career, or return to learning after a break.

Explore the financial support you could be entitled to:

Free Courses for Eligible Adults (Adult Skills Fund)

The Adult Skills Fund (ASF) supports students aged 19 and over who live in non-devolved areas (like Devon) and meet the residency and income eligibility criteria. You could get your course fully funded if you are:

  • Unemployed
  • Earning below the income threshold
  • Looking to gain valuable skills to move into work or progress in your career

This funding is available across a wide range of courses, including tailored learning programmes to support your wellbeing, community engagement, and personal development.

First Full Level 3 Qualification (Free Courses for Jobs)

If you’re aged 19 to 23 and have not yet achieved a full Level 3 qualification (such as A Levels or equivalent), you may be entitled to study for free.

If you’re 24 or over and meet certain income criteria, you may also be eligible through the Free Courses for Jobs (FCFJ) offer, which targets adults who are unemployed or earning below a set threshold.

English and Maths Support

Haven’t yet achieved a grade 4 (or C) in English or maths? You’re entitled to free English and/or maths courses, helping you build essential skills for work, further education or everyday life.

Advanced Learner Loan

Planning to study a Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 qualification (such as a diploma or higher technical qualification) but not eligible for free courses?

The Advanced Learner Loan could help cover your tuition fees. It’s easy to apply, doesn’t depend on your income, and you won’t need to pay anything back until you’re earning over the repayment threshold.

Tailored Learning Programmes

We also offer tailored learning opportunities designed to help you:

  • Support your child’s education
  • Improve your health and wellbeing
  • Connect with your community These programmes may also be eligible for funding depending on your circumstances.
