Start nowAt South Devon College, we’re proud to be at the forefront of photonics education – an innovative and rapidly-growing field that underpins everything from laser surgery and autonomous vehicles to ultra-fast broadband and next-gen manufacturing. Photonics is the science of light, using photons instead of electrons to transmit data, create precision tools and drive innovation across multiple industries.
Our specialist Kao/Hockham Electronic and Photonics Training Suite, located within the College’s cutting-edge £17 million Hi Tech & Digital Centre, offers a dedicated learning environment with state-of-the-art equipment and industry-grade resources.
Our photonics facilities play a central role in pioneering initiatives such as the PICPAC project – a ground-breaking programme focused on nurturing the next generation of talent in photonic semiconductors.
South Devon College also hosts prestigious international photonics conferences, drawing academic, research and industry leaders to share insight, inspire collaboration, and showcase the innovation taking place within our facilities.
The Hi Tech & Digital Centre also features industry-standard provisions, including 3D printing and precision machining workshops, advanced materials testing suites, PLC programming and electrical training labs, and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) suites. Our photonics department works in close partnership with the Torbay Hi-Tech Cluster and EPIC in Torbay, forming part of a wider regional strategy to power the future of photonics and advanced engineering.
