CMI Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA) Level 6
The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA) is for professional managers who take lead responsibility for people, projects, operations and/or services to deliver long-term organisational success.
It is applicable to professional managers from all sectors, private, public or third sector, and all sizes of organisations. This apprenticeship has been designed to provide access to development opportunities for as wide a range of individuals as possible.
The course would be beneficial for those at the start of their career wishing to become professional managers and achieve Chartered Manager status, or those who have already developed practical experience but wish to develop their theoretical understanding of management skills further.
This apprenticeship has been developed by a group of employers, in partnership with a number of higher education institutions and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Under this scheme, workers who complete the apprenticeship will achieve a BA (Hons) in Leadership and Management, and become a Chartered Manager.
University level qualifications at University Centre South Devon are rated GOLD by the Teaching Excellence Framework, a system for recognising excellent teaching and learning in higher education. In addition to this, students on the previous cohort recorded a satisfaction score of 100% for their studies on this programme.
Course Details
- You will require good literacy and IT skills
- You should ideally have senior management responsibility
- You should ideally have management responsibility
- You must be willing to take part in group discussions and practical activities
- You must have achieved A Levels, a foundation degree, and/or a recognised management or leadership qualification at Level 5
- To apply, you will need to demonstrate and evidence where you have taken responsibility to deliver long-term organisational success.
The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship is an exciting work-based route towards developing professionally competent Chartered Managers.
It includes three parts:
Work-based learning which means that the apprentice is in paid employment for the duration of their apprenticeship and receives on the job training and support.
The completion of the BA (Hons) Leadership and Management at UCSD
Through both of the above, apprentices are able to acquire knowledge and skills, and prepare for the End Point Assessment, which has the assessment for Chartered Manager embedded.
The degree will consist of 5 modules which include:
Leadership and Management Concepts: This module provides an overview of the role of leadership and management within organisations and the differences between the two concepts. The relationship to a range of processes at individual, team, organisational and national levels will be explored; adopting multiple perspectives and viewpoints.
Operational Decision Making: Operational performance is imperative for continued success of organisations. This module looks at data management and effective decision making to support employee engagement and provide a motivational environment thus maximising effort.
Corporate Strategy in Action: This module draws from concepts of strategy in order to analyse real-world concepts, important for leadership and management decision making. It will explore both the theories and models of strategy, including the processes of developing a strategy, focussing on a range of analytical tools and their significance.
Extended Professional Practice: This module gives you the opportunity to work on a project that meets the needs of your organisation, enabling you to apply a wide range of knowledge, skills and behaviours into a project that will impact and have benefit to your organisation.

For experienced managers, this degree apprenticeship offers a ‘Fast Track’ route by accrediting prior experiential learning (APEL) against our Foundation Degree, meaning that your studies can develop from your existing knowledge and skills and allow you to start at Level 6 to complete the programme over two years of part time study.
