Sport Coaching and Development Extended Diploma Level 3
This course focuses on what it means to work in the world of sport, covering both the practical and theoretical skills that are required for high level sports performance and coaching. Further, you will be covering theoretical topics like psychology and anatomy as part of this qualification. It is the natural progression from the Level 2 course, building on your skills to help you grow as a sporting professional and instructor.
Practical experience is just as important as the theory on this course. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to work in the community and coach varied participants, either through volunteering or a work placement, to get the practical experience employers want to see and to help your CV stand out from the crowd.
This course is all about preparing you for employment or further study, giving you the skills that the sport and coaching industry require. You’ll have the opportunity to gain the practical experience that will help your employment prospects and progression options.
Upon completion, you will be well prepared for employment, an apprenticeship or further study at university. You may be able to progress to University Centre South Devon and study FdSc Sports Coaching and Fitness.

Progression opportunities
The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development focuses primarily on progression to employment as a coach. The extension, breadth and depth of optional units in this qualification give you employment opportunities for working with participants of all ages, from children in primary and secondary schools, to adults of all ages. Possible job roles include community coach, sport-specific school coach, sport-specific after-school coach and weekend multi-sports holiday coach. You will also have the skills and expertise to work with beginners up to high-level performers. They will be able to work in the role of club sports coach, progressing to working with elite performers and in sport-development programmes in many capacities.
This qualification gives you the opportunity to progress to further study in higher education. It will attract UCAS Tariff points and is recognised by higher-education providers as meeting entry requirements for many related degree programmes, such as a BA (Hons) in Sports Coaching and Development and a BA (Hons) in Sports Management. You should check entry requirements for degree programmes with providers.
