This is an exciting opportunity for outdoor activity centres, schools or environmental organisations to develop either a current member of staff or a new recruit, who will focus on developing their outdoor learning session delivery.
The main responsibility of an Outdoor Activity Instructor is to run a safe and enjoyable outdoor learning activity session. Your apprentice will prepare for the session by gathering information about the participants and resources for the activity. They will deliver the session; briefing the participants, maintaining safety and providing ongoing instruction and encouragement.
They will aim to meet the session outcomes by supporting participants to gain new skills and knowledge, take on personal and team challenges, and have fun trying new activities. Your apprentice will close the session by handing over participants, returning resources and equipment, and logging any issues.
They will exercise autonomy and judgement to complete tasks and call for back-up support for any incidents that might occur. They will actively respect the environment and show a positive attitude.
Your Training Officer will work with you to agree an individual learning plan for your apprentice, which may include additional qualifications such as British Canoeing FSRT, Paddle Sports Instructor, Mountain Training, Climbing Wall Instructor Training, Outdoor First Aid and Safeguarding. Your apprentice will be required to complete Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths is these have not previously been achieved.
"I started the 'Football for all' group for adults with learning disabilities, providing members with the opportunity to compete and socialise. I received funding from Plymouth University's Student Projects fund, and put the skills I had developed at University Centre South Devon into practice, which informed my coaching and bespoke training programmes. The group provides a stepping stone for adults with learning difficulties to get into mainstream football. It changes perceptions, enables people to make new friends and improves their confidence as well. It's been an incredibly rewarding experience for myself and provides a valuable service within the community."Robert Helmore
