Introduction to Commercial Fishing Level 2
This course will give you a basic knowledge and awareness of different activities that are commonplace aboard commercial fishing vessels. It spans three weeks and consists of four compulsory one-day sessions that are legally required for working on a fishing vessel:
Sea survival
Health and safety
First aid
Firefighting
The course covers a comprehensive range of essential topics, including safe working practices, manual handling, and the use of PPE. You will learn about fishing methods, species identification, knife skills, and the care of the catch, alongside key topics like catch reporting, sustainability, and minimum sizes. The course also addresses environmental responsibilities, pollution, and fishing for litter, with practical insights into fishing gear maintenance and vessel operations. Additionally, it includes safety training in sea survival, health and safety, first aid, and firefighting, as well as stability awareness, machinery checks, and emergency procedures.
You will also have opportunities to visit fishing vessels, explore industry standard practices, and hear from guest speakers from organisations such as Seafish, the MCA, and the RNLI.
On successful completion of the course, you will be presented with basic safety training certificates, allowing you to work on UK-registered commercial fishing vessels.

The staff at the College were so kind, supportive and helpful when I first met them. My peers had different abilities - some were already part of the fitness community, some were already personal trainers and the rest were beginners like me. It didn’t matter how new or how much experience you had. We all became a team and we all enhanced and supported each other’s experience. The Exercise to Music class gave me the confidence to understand how to support the participants, the confidence to stand in front of people, and support them all to do their best during training.
