Introduction to Commercial Fishing Level 2
The Introduction to Commercial Fishing (ICF) course gives new entrants a basic knowledge and awareness of different activities that are commonplace aboard commercial fishing vessels.
It is a three week course. It includes four mandatory one-day courses which are legally required to work on a fishing vessel. These are:
Sea survival
Health and safety
First aid
Firefighting
On successful completion of the course, students will be presented with their basic safety training certificates, allowing them to work on UK-registered commercial fishing vessels.
The course is essentially a collection of short courses and comprises the units listed below:
Course Units:
Introductions, Course overview, expectations and online learning registration.
Safe working, manual handling,PPE
Fishing methods, fish species, knife skills, care of the catch.
Minimum sizes, catch reporting, MPA’s, Sustainability.
Fish market, vessels visit
Responsible fishing standard.
Pollution, fishing for litter, Environmental responsibilities
Care and repair of fishing gear
Kingfisher – Offshore awareness
Lights, shapes, buoyage, rules of the road
ILO 188, HMRC, NI, M Notices
Machinery checks, planned and routine maintenance
Knots and splices
Vessel emergencies, radio, location aids
Tides and Meteorology
Basic sea survival
Basic Health and Safety
Basic First Aid
Basic Firefighting
Introduction to stability awareness
Course debrief, forward look, presentations
Opportunity for Guest speakers (e.g. Seafish, MCA, RNLI, Fishermens Mission, MMO)

If the amount shown is more than £0.00 and you are aged 19 and over at the start of the course, you may have options to help fund your studies with us. The funding you can receive depends on your personal circumstances, and could mean you are entitled to fully subsidised or reduced tuition fees.
Many of our courses are fully funded for 16-18 year olds however not all courses are available for this age group.
You may also be entitled to support with travel, childcare and equipment.
