24th October 2023
The Community Day at Torquay United AFC kicked off in style and was a huge success, both on and off the pitch, with the hosting team emerging victorious at the event, sponsored by South Devon College.
Hundreds of members of local sports teams and clubs packed out the Wollens Terrace at Plainmoor for the home game against Welling, and cheers could be heard across the Bay at the final whistle, with The Gulls celebrating the winning 5-1 scoreline, their biggest league win of the 2023/24 season so far.
The collaboration between South Devon College and TUAFC continues to strengthen and develop, with United’s home shirts for 2023/24 proudly displaying the South Devon College logo. The College is the first front-of-shirt sponsor of United’s kits since 2019, forging a close relationship between the two establishments, both keen to support the local Torbay sporting community, and to bring wider benefits to the Bay area.
Commenting on the success of another Community Day, Dom Mee, Torquay United’s Supporter Liaison Officer, said: “Saturday’s match was a wonderful occasion for everyone involved, and to win 5-1 made the afternoon even more special!
“It was fantastic to see so many local grassroots and community groups taking advantage of the offer, and the Club would like to extend its thanks to South Devon College for sponsoring this initiative.
“This is further evidence of our superb partnership with the College, and Saturday was the perfect example of the fantastic results we can achieve when we work together.”
The motivation behind the Community Day is to highlight the facilities available across Torbay, promote local worthy causes and unite local residents and sporting clubs.
Laurence Frewin, Principal and CEO of South Devon College, said: “South Devon College was incredibly proud to sponsor Torquay United’s Community Day, and it’s wonderful that it was such a success, both for the victorious team and for the local communities.
“Together we can bring local residents and sports clubs together to inspire them to utilise all the amazing opportunities that are available in Torbay.”
