19th November 2021

South Devon College has made it through as a finalist in the prestigious AoC Beacon Awards.

The College was shortlisted for two awards; the Nous Group Award for Education for Sustainable Development and the RCU Award for Support for Students.

Matt Green, Sustainability Lead at South Devon College, said: “We are extremely happy and proud to be announced as a finalist for the prestigious Beacon Award for Education for Sustainable development. Earlier this year we launched our 10 year Sustainability Strategy and we have since seen increased engagement from both staff and learners in this important agenda. We have raised awareness of all aspects of sustainability, particularly Climate Change and the challenges that we face.”

Alex Howarth, Head of SEND, Learning Opportunities and Vulnerable Learners at South Devon College said: “In being shortlisted for this Beacon Award, as a College we are proud to be recognised for all the hard work that’s being invested into supporting our Young Adult Carers, a group of young people who are unsung heroes and an inspiration to us all.”

Association of Colleges’ Beacon Awards celebrate the best and most innovative practice among UK colleges each year.

The award, supported by the Nous Group, recognises, celebrates and promotes examples of colleges that support the transition to greener economies and fairer societies and integrate critical issues such as climate change, biodiversity, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable consumption and production, into the curriculum.

The award supported by the RCU seeks to recognise, celebrate and promote examples of student support provided by colleges for a significant group of students, across a whole provision or college wide approach.

Mark White OBE DL, Chair of AoC’s Charitable Trust said:

“The AoC Beacon Awards showcase exactly why colleges are so important to every community and why people value them. This award recognises colleges who are taking action on climate change, being innovative and moving to Net Zero. The work of the finalists highlights how seriously colleges are taking Education for Sustainable Development and we’re delighted that so many colleges have already adopted the FE Climate Action Roadmap.”
