Students of all ages at South Devon College have collected their GCSE and level 2 qualification results. Being united again after an unusually long time apart was one of the highlights of the students’ experience. The qualifications achieved today will hugely support their transition into the next chapter of their learning journey.
South Devon College offers a wide range of GCSE subjects. For many, College provides an opportunity to improve on their previous school achievements in English and maths to support progression and future employment.
Each year GCSEs continue to open up new and exciting opportunities for adults who have returned to education with aspirations to progress into higher education or onto an access to higher education course.
James Hoff was thrilled with his results in English and maths, which will enable him to go on and study performing arts at the College. He said, “When you work with people who are easy to get on with and give you encouragement, anything is possible.” | |
Joshua Jones-Bailey was relieved to receive grades 4-6 in maths, biology, sociology and English language. Joshua returned to education after six years because he was keen to get his life back on track and needed the grades to pursue a programme at University Centre South Devon (UCSD), where he’ll study social science in September. | |
Megan Johnson was over the moon to achieve a grade 6 in English, after transferring from another college. She said, “Once you show that you’re willing to learn, the tutors give you so much support. I couldn’t have done it without that.” Megan is now looking forward to studying A Levels at South Devon College. | |
Kirsty Freeman from Kingsteignton was overwhelmed at her success in achieving excellent results in maths, English, sociology, biology and psychology having returned to education after a long break. Kirsty is now going on to pursue an apprenticeship in nursing. She advised others who might be considering a new career to “Take that leap, I’m really pleased I did.” | |
Lisa Berresford from Brixham was overjoyed to achieve a grade 6 in English, which will allow her to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher. She arrived to collect her results with Paula Hough who achieved the same excellent result. Both commented on having made new friends at the College and advised others, “Don’t worry about your age, just bite the bullet and go for it. It’s the best thing you’ll do.” | |
Rebecca Mercer shared her excitement with her two children when she collected her result, a grade 4 in maths. Rebecca has recently completed a foundation degree in Biosciences at University Centre South Devon (UCSD) and is now able to pursue her ambition of becoming a teacher. She said, “The teachers are so helpful, it’s just a nice place to be.” |
Matthew Harbour, Vice Principal and Deputy CEO at South Devon College said, “a massive congratulations to all our students. Although this year has been very challenging on many levels, these great achievements are a real testament to hard work and dedication. Students can now progress onto the next important steps in their educational journey and we wish them well. Thanks too to our fantastic GCSE teaching team and support staff who despite the trials presented by the pandemic have worked devotedly with their students to support their learning and progression.”
Students have the opportunity to progress to a wide range of courses at South Devon College, including continuing their journey through to higher education at University Centre South Devon. With a strong focus on employability and digital skills, students will be able to learn and develop the skills that employers need now, more than ever, to find new and innovative ways of working on the road to economic recovery.
