  • #TechTuesday: experience a new world in games design

Home » News » All News » #TechTuesday: experience a new world in games design

10th March 2020

South Devon College are proud to be hosting a range of fun, hands-on one-day ‘Tech Tasters’ with no previous experience necessary! These taster days aim to introduce participants to exciting technical concepts and fun practical skills; sparking interest and confidence to pursue further learning.

The Tech Tasters are being delivered as part of the Digital Momentum programme; a Heart of the South West Digital Skills Partnership pilot programme funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Digital Skills Innovation Fund.

One of these sessions will introduce you to some of the key concepts of Games Design. The session will cover areas like how games are developed using various programmes and the foundations to what makes a game engaging and entertaining.

This will be a great opportunity to get an insight into what careers are available in the games design industry and what courses are available at South Devon College that will get you on the right path for an exciting career.

Assistant Principal of South Devon College, Steve Caunter, said: “With the recent opening of the cutting edge Hi Tech & Digital Centre and inclusion being one of our core values as a college, these taster sessions are the perfect way to find out about training opportunities available on your doorstep in this fast growing sector.

“These sessions will provide a great foundation for other courses that are available to study at South Devon College and will develop the skills needed to become more confident and successful in a digital world – both in and outside of work.”

There are some criteria for being eligible to take part in the taster sessions. To increase the number of females in this industry, the sessions are open to all women living in Somerset, Devon, Torbay or Plymouth.

But also, the sessions are looking to give all people in deprived areas the chance to experience different aspects of the world of hi-tech. Residents in a ward which falls into the bottom 20% of most deprived wards* within Somerset, Devon, Torbay or Plymouth will also be eligible to take part (*as defined by the Index for Multiple Deprivation 2015).

See the list of eligible wards of residency here. Please note this eligibility criteria is only specific to participants who are not female.
