  • Students reach WorldSkills UK Final for Health and Social Care

Home » News » All News » Students reach WorldSkills UK Final for Health and Social Care

24th October 2019

Level 3 Health and Social Care students, Emily Summers and Harriet Powell, have scored in the top eight of competitors across all six regional heats of WorldSkills UK – the world’s largest vocational skills competition which aims to find the best adult health and social care students and workers in the country.

South Devon College hosted the regional heats for WorldSkills UK at the Centre for Health and Care Professions (CHCP) on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th June 2019, attracting competitors from across the UK.

Emily has completed over 300 hours work placement at a specialist school for children with additional needs, and Harriet is a part time care assistant at a local residential care home for the elderly, alongside studying at South Devon College.

During the heats, 78 students and trainees from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales demonstrated their health and care sector skills in a mix of written tests and live activities. They were assessed by a panel of expert judges charged with finding the eight competitors for the finals, which are being held during the Skills Show at the NEC from 21st – 23rd November 2019.

The activities put competitors to the test, including working with stroke victims and people with learning disabilities, replicating situations which health and social care workers would be expected to face in their everyday roles.

Congratulations Emily and Harriet!
