Construction students based at South Devon College’s Brunel Skills Centre in Newton Abbot are working hard to create a commemorative bench ready for Remembrance Day.
Work has so far included the panels are being painted at All Saints Marsh Primary School after six pieces of work were selected from such a wonderful collection.
The main supports have all been made by using traditional methods of mortice and tenon joints and sanded to a smooth finish. The students have cut all of the angles of the seat and hope that the bench will be assembled very soon. That will leave the back frames to be made, which will then be painted white. The bench will then need to be varnished and capping pieces to be machined.
The students are learning new skills along the way such as using a pillar drill, using an electric router and sander as well as working to very tight tolerances.
The bench will officially be revealed following the Remembrance service on 11th November in Golden Lion Square, Newton Abbot
