  • #TechTuesday: Hi Tech & Digital Centre is almost ready. Take a look!

Home » News » All News » #TechTuesday: Hi Tech & Digital Centre is almost ready. Take a look!

27th August 2019

What a sight to behold; the Hi Tech & Digital Centre at South Devon College is almost ready to welcome future generations of students aspiring to work in the world of hi-tech engineering, and creative and digital media.

The exterior looks stunning and is now complete, and the interior is where the exciting developments are now happening.

The inside of the building fulfils the vision of the minds behind it, with many large and open collaborative spaces that will encourage interaction across different subject areas. Here is one of the many spaces available in the building which you will be able to find on level 2 by the lifts.

The South Devon Business Centre, operated by the Torbay Development Agency (TDA), has a number of offices that will be available to rent out so that new businesses can have a dedicated workspaces, enabling smaller and start-up business to have easier access to business support facilities to create and develop products.

With manufacturing in mind, the engineering room is operational and all machines now fully installed.  This includes the latest CNC machining technology taking students on a journey from essential skills through to the latest programming and digital skills required in a modern manufacturing environment. There is now only a small number of things left to do to tick this facility off the list.

Here is an example of one of the many interactive screens that will be fitted in every room of the building. These 4k 75 inch touchscreen displays from Dell will replace the traditional projector and whiteboard classroom setup. These displays allow all devices to cast their screen wirelessly, not only making the setup more straight-forward, but also makes it easier for students to showcase their project work and present to their peers and potential employers.

Finally, one of the unique selling points of the Centre. The screening suite. This 4K projector, 7.1 surround sound setup, with 100 seats, will deliver a true digital cinematic experience. Whether you are studying film, photography, gaming, or perhaps you want to host a conference here, this suite will deliver on a wide array of purposes. With today’s world being so digitally connected, the Hi Tech & Digital Centre is too. The screening suite hosts the ability to cast to all of the 4K screens in the building, which opens up a world of possibilities when it comes to events and exhibitions.

Other features that are being finalised are the sound recording booths, photography studio, video and editing studio, the e-library, and an internal computing network which we talked a little bit about with Liam Bottomley and Joel Stoddard Turvey over the last couple of weeks in our previous #TechTuesday features.

Soon, it will be time for you to experience the Hi Tech & Digital Centre for yourself.

The Hi Tech & Digital Centre is due to open in September 2019. We look forward to seeing you there!

It will be a flagship facility, alongside other Institutes of Technology developments in the country.
