It’s with huge pride that South Devon High School today has welcomed many excited pupils through the doors to collect their GCSE results.
The High School pupils have exceeded their targets and can now celebrate progressing into further education, with 74% of pupils achieving pass grades 4-9 in English and maths and 70% in science. In addition the High School has seen some of the very highest grades across the wider range of the GCSE subjects with 97% of students passing GCSE Photography, 80% of students achieving A*-B grades in Childcare, and 30% of students achieving Grades 7 or above (A and above) in Sociology.
Across the High School pupils have excelled over a wider range of subject areas, including a personalised choice of specialist technical qualifications such as Digital Media, Childcare, Computing, Hospitality and Sports Science. For many, today represents a big landmark in the next step of their chosen paths, with their GCSE results providing the foundations for further success and a gateway to a bright and successful future.
Mia Evans from Paignton achieved exceptionally high grades in a range of subjects including, a 9 in English literature and a 9 in combined science. She also achieved fantastic grades in maths, photography and geography. After studying A Levels her ambition is to study a Law degree. Mia said, “The teachers here were incredible, and so helpful.” | |
Joe Hazell from Totnes came to collect his results with his Mum, Marie. After getting the high grade results he wanted, Joe is now looking forward to progressing to grammar school to study A Levels. Marie said, “I’m thrilled with Joe’s results. The smaller class sizes and learning support here really made a difference to him.” | |
Katie Green along with her mum, Shelley, came to the High School to collect results. Katie achieved amazing high grades in English literature, English language, maths, science, animal care, photography, sociology and history. Speaking about her next steps she said, “I want to study A Levels and hopefully go down a medical route.” | |
Jobie Triffitt will now be enrolling on to the Level 3 Sports Science at South Devon College. He gained excellent high grades in English literature, English language, maths, science, sport science, computer science, creative media and business. His advice is. “Accept the help provided and take every opportunity! Everyone here is so supportive, helpful and knowledgeable.” | |
Kaytee Adams from Paignton achieved high grades across eight subjects including English, maths, science, computer science and digital media. Kaytee is progressing to study A Levels or a diploma. Her advice to pupils preparing for their GCSEs is “Revising is worth it, you will get the results you need!” | |
After achieving amazing grades, including an 8 in English Literature and an 8 in Art, Riley Dowell is now planning on progressing to study the UAL Digital Media: Film and Television extended diploma at South Devon College. He said the best thing about studying at the High School was, “the teachers and the relaxed environment.” | |
Having gained excellent grades across a number of subjects Alex Wharton collected her results alongside her mum, Sam. Having gained high grades across a number of subjects Alex is now progressing to study an art and design course at South Devon College. She chose to come to South Devon High School for the range of specialist subjects on offer and the mature learning environment. Alex’s mum, Sam, said, “What an amazing school – a great energy and staff were so supportive to every pupil. As a parent I couldn’t have asked for more – a daughter who has made so much progress.” |

Pupils can now look forward to their exciting next steps, with many progressing to A Levels, apprenticeships or technical and professional courses at South Devon College.”
South Devon High School is committed to giving young people the best chance to succeed. It combines academic and technical qualifications with great opportunity for progression into further and higher education. Over 70% of the High School GCSE pupils this year are expected to progress on to studying either A-Levels or specific technical qualifications at Level 3.
Pupils who attend South Devon High School have the opportunity to progress to Level 3 study at South Devon College and continue their journey through to higher education. With a strong focus on employability, young people are able to develop the necessary skills valued by employers to prepare them for a successful future. Pupils will work with state of the art, industry standard, equipment and resources which include access to the new South Devon College Sports Centre and Hi Tech & Digital Centre. The College has strong links with the University of Plymouth and with a wide range of local and regional employers. Having also been awarded Foundation Degree Awarding Powers (FDAP), University Centre South Devon can deliver and award its own foundation degrees that are tailored to local employers.
