1st July 2019
In Celebration of International Women in Engineering Day 2019, South Devon College hosted a Science Technology Engineering & Maths (STEM) event on the 21st June 2019, to deliver a carousel of engaging and inspiring activities. The aim was to inspire, engage and encourage young women in to pursuing a life changing career within Engineering, Computing, Science and Digital Media.
BBC Spotlight’s Johnny Rutherford attended to report on the day and give women in this industry the recognition and promotion it deserves.
The schools that came and attended this inspiring event were:
- Brixham College
- KEVICC
- Paignton Community and Sports Academy
- Tiverton High School
- Torquay Academy
- South Devon High School
South Devon College had around 125 young women from these schools experience different aspects of engineering. The day as a whole was very motivational and encouraging of equality between men and women in the industry.
There were many different activities such as, Basics in Cyber Security, Create an Emoji, Make a Bath Bomb, PLC Programming (Traffic Light simulation), Big Trak Coding and many more have-a-go activities.
What was good about the day was that it wasn’t steering the girls that visited into engineering careers but it simply made them aware that they can pursue work in this area. Some girls were very keen to go into other industries like beauty, hairdressing, medical, animal care, art, photography and many others. But they appreciated the awareness that was being made of career options for women.
