Last week South Devon College was pleased to welcome a special visit from member of the House of Lords, Lord Teverson to our Paignton campus.
The latest stop on the Lord Speaker’s ‘Peers in Schools’ outreach programme, Lord Teverson offered encouragement to current A Level Law students, engaging them on the political and parliamentary processes.
Also Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Cornwall and West Plymouth, Lord Teverson’s visit provided students with a fascinating insight into the work and role of the House of Lords. Using animations and real life examples, the audience were captivated through a presentation followed by a question and answer session on various aspects of the parliamentary process and general life at Westminster.
When asked about the benefits of visiting the College’s students, Lord Teverson said, “It’s a great pleasure of mine to visit the education establishments across my home region of the South West. The talks are a fantastic way to engage with students and share experiences of life in Westminster. I hope my visit helps inspire the next generation of aspiring politicians, and at the same time it’s an opportunity for myself to gather their ideas and share them amongst the House of Lords”.
Lecturer of Law, Criminology and Mathematics at South Devon College, Kay Harding adds, “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to interact with someone who knows the parliamentary system inside out, as it can sometimes seem far removed from their daily lives, but today they have had a thorough insight into the workings of Westminster”.
The visit was arranged through the Lord Speaker’s ‘Peers in Schools’ outreach programme, first established in 2007 and has so far involved around 90,000 young people across the UK providing inspiration for one day pursuing a career in politics.
