It’s with huge pride that South Devon High School today has welcomed many excited pupils in celebrating the best year of GCSE results.
Our thrilled pupils have exceeded their own personal targets and can now look forward to progressing into further education, with 88% of pupils achieving upper tier grades 4-9 in English, 74% in Maths and 72% in Science. In addition the High School has seen some of the very highest grades across the wider range of the GCSE subjects with 50% of photography pupils achieving grades 7-9 (A-A*) and 65% of Business Studies grades at 6-9 (A*-B).
Across the High School pupils have excelled over a wider range of subject areas, including a personalised choice of specialist technical qualifications such as Digital Media, Childcare, Computing, Hospitality and Sports Science. For many, today represents a big landmark in the next step of their chosen paths, with their GCSE results providing the foundations for further success and a gateway to a bright and successful future.
Chloe Gunbie (16, from Paignton) achieved exceptional GCSE results including a grade 9 in both English Language and English Literature, 9 in Photography and 7 in Geography, allowing Chloe to continue her studies in A-Levels. When asked about her experience of South Devon High School, Chloe said, “I found the teachers throughout the High School to be amazing, they helped create a real family atmosphere here during my studies”.
Michaela Scott (16, from Paignton) gained brilliant GCSE results including a grade 8 in English Literature, 7 in English Language, and 7 in Mathematics. Michaela’s hard work has earnt her the grades to continue onto A-Level studies and when asked for her thoughts on South Devon High School, Michaela added, “I liked that there’s such a wide range of courses to choose from. I found each tutor to be super friendly and helpful”.
Katy Edwards (16, from Dartmouth) gained excellent GCSE results with grades 9 in Photography, 6 in English Language and 6 in Biology. Katy’s plan is to continue her studies at A-Levels before progressing onto a Civil Engineering degree at University. Katy said, “The teachers at South Devon High School were really helpful. The High School offered all the courses I was interested in such as Computer Science”.
Shannon Duncan (16, from Torquay) achieved fantastic GCSE results including a grade 8 in Combined Science, 7 in Maths and 6 both English Literature and English Language. Shannon’s grades will allow her to soon start an Accountancy apprenticeship. A thrilled Shannon added, “South Devon High School helped give me the confidence boost I needed to continue my studies and I knew that coming here was the best option for me”.
Holly Barton-Pye (16, from Paignton) passed all her GCSEs with flying colours including a grade 7 in English, 7 in Photography and 6 in Combined Science. Holly now plans to study Performing Arts at college with aims to one day audition at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. On collecting her grades Holly said, “I chose to study at South Devon High School for the great quality of teaching and smaller class sizes which I think are very important”.
Alex Parsons (16, from Paignton) achieved great GCSEs with grades 5 in English Literature and 5 in English Language. Alex now plans to study Art and other subjects at A-Level, and when asked for his advice to other pupils, Alex said, “Always try your best and be proud of yourself”.

It has been wonderful to see them thrive within the School. The results are an excellent reward for all the pupils’ hard work and it is a testament to the outstanding support and guidance provided by their teachers, and the innovative curriculum we offer. Pupils can now look forward to their exciting next steps, with many progressing to A Levels or technical and professional courses at South Devon College.”
South Devon High School is committed to giving young people the best chance to succeed by combining academic and technical qualifications and providing progression opportunities into further and higher education, with over 70% of our GCSE pupils this year expected to progress on to studying either A-Levels or specific technical qualifications at Level 3.
The College has strong links with the University of Plymouth and a wide range of local and regional employers. With a strong focus on employability, young people are able to develop the necessary skills valued by employers to prepare them for a successful future. Pupils will work with state of the art, industry standard, equipment and resources.
