South Devon College is excited to launch a dedicated suite of A Levels in Torquay, specialising in the health and medical sectors.
The courses will be delivered at the College’s Centre for Health Care Professions (CHCP) near Torbay Hospital. The aim is to support aspiring students who are aiming for a career in a range of industries including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, audiology, nursing, biomedical or biological sciences, radiography and physiotherapy. These highly competitive courses require dedication, excellent achievement at A Level and evidence of high-quality work experience in order to support a successful application to university.
The College achieved an exceptional 100% overall pass rate and ranks as one of the highest for A Level progress in Torbay. The existing provision includes an extensive choice of over 20 subjects. The offer at CHCP will focus on a core of Biology and Chemistry, which allow students to progress on to relevant degrees in the medical and healthcare sector and on to become fully qualified professionals.
Students will be supported with university applications through tailored support which will include employability skills and personal and social development. Students will also benefit from regular visits from industry professionals and guest speakers as well as mentoring from medical professionals at the hospital. Tutors will also provide a broader understanding of current healthcare issues in both a local and national context.
Work experience will form a fundamental part of the A Level study programme with a range of opportunities available at Torbay Hospital one day a week. The College has excellent links with the Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust which help to develop and build direct connections with the industry.
Former A-Level student Sophie Hodson from Torquay achieved brilliant results gaining A*, A*, A, in A Level Biology, Chemistry and Media Studies. She also completed a work experience placement in laboratories at Torbay Hospital during her studies. Sophie progressed to study BSc Biochemistry at the University of Exeter and hopes to study a Master’s degree and PhD in Biomedical/Genetic research. Sophie said “I wanted a challenge so I decided to do A Levels after my GCSEs. I chose South Devon College as I knew it was high-performing and I wanted a change from the school environment. It’s always been my ambition to work in bioscience and the College helped me take the first steps to my dream career.”
