9th March 2018
Employers and apprentices from across South Devon were celebrated at South Devon College’s Apprenticeship Awards Ceremony 2018, delivered in partnership with Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, Heart Radio, Hyundai Torbay and Gooch and Housego.
The event, hosted at the Imperial Hotel Torquay, was a great opportunity to showcase the excellent success of apprentices and the positive impact they have on local businesses and the community. Friends, family and employers were invited to share in the celebrations, with over 200 people in attendance.
There were a total of 35 apprentices shortlisted over 18 categories, having been shortlisted from over 1,300 apprentices on programme with the College. A total of 27 local employers were also nominated for categories, having been selected from nearly 700 businesses engaged in an apprenticeship.
Kevin Foster MP for Torbay delivered a keynote speech. He discussed the incredible benefit apprenticeships have within Torbay and wider areas across a range of sectors. Kevin Foster was joined onstage by guest speaker Jess Morgan, Workplace Coordinator for Project Management at South Devon College.
The College also announced the ‘Apprentice of the Year’, which was awarded to Christian Price from Moretonhampstead. He currently works with Buckfast Abbey Grange Restaurant. Christian also won Hospitality and Catering Apprentice of the Year; he was praised for showing outstanding levels of dedication and progression. Christian said, “It was an honour to be named ‘Apprentice of the Year’. Events such as this bring together employers, apprentices and members of the community to celebrate the success of apprenticeships and the benefits they provide for businesses.”
Stephen Criddle OBE, Principal and CEO of South Devon College, said, “The Apprenticeship Awards Ceremony was another wonderful evening to celebrate the many brilliant apprentices who are really transforming the local economy. As an apprentice employer ourselves, we know first-hand the value that apprentices bring to any business, and the pride we experience as they flourish, develop their skills and help the organisation move forward and grow. Everyone nominated to receive an award tonight should be incredibly proud of themselves and their achievements, having been shortlisted from over 1,300 other apprentices. I’m sure friends, family, employers and everyone associated from the College will join me in congratulating our younger and older winners, they are truly inspiring and I have no doubt that they will all go on to achieve great things.”
Special thanks to our panel of judges for tirelessly working their way through the 130 nominations received this year.
