Skills Support for the Workforce (SSW) is a programme developed to upskill employees within small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Devon and Somerset. SSW provide recognised, accredited qualifications and bespoke training courses to enhance employees’ skills, increase the competitiveness of businesses and boost the local economy. South Devon College is part of Serco’s network of expert organisations chosen to deliver SSW programmes. SSW is co-financed by the European Social Fund and the Education and Skills Funding Agency.
Dawlish Tyre and Auto Centre based on Dawlish Business Park is a successful family-run SME, specialising in general car repairs, bodywork, servicing and restoration of vintage Land Rovers for the American market. Owner Brett South thought the programme would be a great opportunity for his apprentices, Lewis South and Toby Durrant, to learn more skills and to help his business grow.
To identify areas of development, Nick Green (Programme Co-ordinator for Automotive at South Devon College) completed a training needs analysis. The analysis highlighted that the apprentices would benefit from advanced diagnostic skills training and the garage could benefit from being able to offer air conditioning maintenance. As a result, Brett, Lewis and Toby signed up to a one week course at South Devon College in Newton Abbot to upskill. The week consisted of non-regulated diagnostic and vehicle inspection skills sessions and the final day involved training for the IMI Level 3 Automotive Air-Conditioning Servicing and Maintenance Award.
Brett South said, “The support from the curriculum staff has been second to none. The team are very approachable and work in partnership to develop both the apprentices and our business. I am really pleased with the outcome.”
Since completing the funded training, Lewis and Toby have been promoted and Dawlish Tyre and Auto Centre have gained prestigious Institute of the Motor Industry Accreditation; which has resulted in increased trade and profit. Brett is now looking to expand the business by opening another centre in the area for Lewis and Toby to run.
