3rd April 2017
The first South Devon College, Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) Student Conference was held at the Professional Centre, Heathfield. This lively and stimulating day was supported by speakers from a range of local employers, Plymouth University and the CIPD Devon and Cornwall Branch. As keynote speaker, Dr Sue Kinsey of Plymouth University provided a thought provoking start with the ‘Future of HR’. An animated debate around the subject of unfair dismissal presented by a team from Kitson’s via a ‘Mock Tribunal’ was then followed up with a question and answer style law update.
For the rest of the day students were then able to select from a range of shorter workshops including: ‘Employee Engagement’ from Engage for Success, ‘The Win-Win of Talent Development’ from Bishop Flemming, ‘Managing Change in Response to External Influences’ from Devon and Cornwall Police, and ‘Wellbeing at Work’ from the Met Office.
Feedback from the conference included:
‘Very helpful and insightful’
‘Motivational and inspiring’
‘Lots of interaction’
‘More of the same please’
.. and many more agreeing that the event exceeded their expectations.
Following such a successful first conference the teaching team, led by Lynda Breslin, hope to make this an annual event and open up the invitations to past students as well as those currently studying on the CIPD Foundation Certificate in HR Practice and Intermediate Certificate in HR Management.
