  • Egg-ceptional students collaborate to build hen house at Lower Sharpham Farm

Home » News » College News » Egg-ceptional students collaborate to build hen house at Lower Sharpham Farm

3rd March 2017

Bricklaying and Carpentry students from South Devon College have spent the last 3 months constructing a brand new hen house for 160 organic hens.

These hens will provide delicious organic eggs to local businesses as well as valuable work experience for adults with learning disabilities from the Robert Owen Communities (ROC).

The people who ROC support have been eagerly awaiting the day when the hen house is complete and the hens arrive, all the while preparing the egg grading room and building up a customer base to supply up to 1000 eggs a week.

.

Jack Skuse, of Ambios, who oversaw the project said, ‘We are delighted with the outcome of this project. Our previous hen house was on its last legs, and in need of a full revamp. The finished product is nothing short of remarkable! Our new egg production will provide valuable work experience for the people who ROC support, by looking after the welfare of the birds and grading, boxing and distributing eggs as well as providing quality organic eggs to local businesses and directly to individual customers. We look forward to selling them on our market stall later in the year.’

.

Jonny Standing, Programme Coordinator for Woodtrades at South Devon College said, “We are really pleased with our partnership with Ambios and ROC at Lower Sharpham Farm. It is vital our students both learn the fundamentals of carpentry in the workshop but also get on the job experiences. These type of community projects are the best way of achieving this. We are really pleased to know that our hard work will add such a valuable asset to Lower Sharpham Farm, and for the people who come here.”

The Lower Sharpham Farm brand ‘Good Eggs’ are available via the farm gate, the market stall or contact 01803 732747 if you are a local business with regular demand.
