South Devon College are delighted to be working with Paignton Picture House Cinema on a collaborative project named ‘Memoirs of a Cinema’, an immersive theatrical, dance and film experience, complete with projections, vintage costumes and props.
The project will present the audience with a multi-media cinematic experience through the decades, as analogue unites with the digital era, against the unique backdrop of the historic Grade II listed building. The performance will bring together the skills and expertise of students from across college including dance, performance, art, fashion, film and media. The experience of working on the project will support the students’ employability skills and help them gain invaluable knowledge – relevant to their desired industry of choice.
Josephine Brown from the Paignton Picture House Cinema Trust said, “The Trust are delighted to have been able to work with the staff and students at South Devon College over the past few months. It has been wonderful to see life and creative energy brought back into the building, and to share the excitement of the students as they develop this important piece of work. We look forward to seeing how they have responded to the history and stories associated with the Paignton Picture House, but also taken a new perspective on the building itself and how its stories can be shared with new audiences. We are looking forward to continuing to work with the College to develop projects in the future that will really help us shape the restoration project.”
Nikita Coombes 16, studying on the Level 3 UAL Art and Design course said, “It‘s so exciting to be part a real-life, practical project in a location that has been unused for such a long time. The performance has been designed so the audience can appreciate the building’s charm and heritage. I recognise what a rare opportunity it is to be working on a one-of-a- kind project like this.”
Sam Aspden, Lecturer at South Devon College said, “This project has been a fantastic opportunity to work within such an inspiring building, and has given the students credible employability experience. The students have all been working so hard and can’t wait for the public to see their costumes, films, dance and artwork in this atmospheric setting.”
