8th November 2016
South Devon College hosted its annual Further Education Student Awards Ceremony on 4th November, welcoming students from across the South West to celebrate their accomplishments with family, friends and staff members. Approximately 600 people attended the event at the Riviera International Conference Centre in Torquay, marking another year of exceptional success for the College and its learners.
213 students were honoured at the event, with awards for Determination, Progress, Outstanding Achievement in Maths and/or English, Outstanding Achievement and the Student or Team of the Year. The ceremony was an excellent opportunity to recognise not only academic success but also personal growth and development, with many students having shown great determination to achieve and succeed, who have now progressed into employment or further training.
A variety of key stakeholders from throughout the local area attended the ceremony including Governors, Councillors, and guests from the local media. The event was opened by Chair of the Governing Body, Dr Karen Stockham, who welcomed those in attendance. Paul Smith CBE delivered a poignant key note speech reminding the students that with a combination of determination and perseverance their dreams can become a reality. Paul Smith is Chairman and founder of Celador Entertainment. Since 1981 he has led the business from its early days as a pioneering television post-production company, through BAFTA and Emmy award winning global TV production, to Oscar triumph in the film industry. He is now primarily focused on radio broadcasting.
Amongst the winners was David Priestley, who won the prestigious Paul Haigney Award, as well as the ‘Award for Outstanding Achievement’ in the A Levels category. The Paul Haigney Award is provided by the Friends of South Devon College, a charitable trust established to remove barriers to learning for disadvantaged students. The Award itself acknowledges triumph over adversity in the face of challenging personal circumstances.
During his two years at the College, through determination, talent and hard work, David developed into a truly exceptional student. In class he was always ready to offer help to others. His cheerful determination inspired the students around him to aim high and, with others, helped the College gain our best ever A2 Maths results. He achieved all this whilst having considerable family responsibilities at home.
David achieved all A’s at AS level and this summer achieved A* in A2 Maths A in A2 Further maths and A in his A2 physics. He is now studying Maths and Statistics at Exeter University.

David’s journey at South Devon College is a great example of how the College’s A Level section provide opportunities at the very highest level to very able young people from across the area.
Stephen Criddle, Principal of South Devon College, said “The Further Education Student Awards Ceremony is always a highpoint of the year at the College, where we can congratulate students who have achieved local, regional and even national success. Whilst all students who pass their chosen course have good reason to celebrate, we believe it is important to acknowledge those who have done exceptionally well, going above and beyond the expectations of their qualification. I know colleagues and governors will join me in wishing all our students a bright future, as we eagerly await seeing what they will go on to achieve next.”
The Further Education Student Awards were followed by the Staff Awards Ceremony, where the College recognised around 100 members of staff who had achieved various qualifications, as well as those who had been nominated by students for their exceptional teaching support. The annual awards are always well received, acting as evidence of the entire College’s commitment to professional development and high quality teaching.
If the success of the 2015/16 students has inspired you to see what you can achieve with the College, you can find out more information at sdcdev, or contact 08000 380 123.
