Current apprentices in the motor retail sector gathered at the headquarters for the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) last week for the Outstanding Achievers Awards 2016. Two South Devon College students Chloe Barnett and Jessica Wallis were shortlisted for the ‘IMI Paint Technician Outstanding Achiever’ award.
The winners and finalists were selected from more than 100,000 learners within the IMI network of more than 660 centres, with the aim of recognising those apprentices that have excelled in their courses. The winners represent future leaders and current role models, setting the benchmark for the rest of the industry.
The event was attended by learners as young as 15, as well as parents and guardians, tutors and IMI Patron, His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent GCVO FIMI.
The award was in recognition of the level of effort and commitment made in gaining their qualifications within the refinishing industry. Wayne Cooper, Programme Coordinator for Automotive completed a statement outlining the journey each learner had taken to achieve their current position within the trade, he said, “As a tutor I’m very proud of both learners being nominated for this national award. This is in recognition of the hard work and dedication shown during their time at South Devon College. I believe that this will provide an excellent platform for both Chloe and Jessica to build a career within the vehicle refinishing industry.”
Final decisions were judged by a panel from the IMI. Both girls were deserved winners, on this occasion, Chloe won the award making Jessica the worthy runner up.
Both Chloe and Jessica have completed an IMI Level 3 qualification in Vehicle Refinishing and have now progressed on to a Level 3 Apprenticeship.
