12th October 2016
A group of students and staff from the Animal Care and Land Based Section supported Farm Wise on Tuesday 11th October. The event is organised by Devon County Council and is designed for primary school children to find out how farming in Devon is connected to the foods they eat. The event, which was held at West Point Arena in Exeter, had 12 ‘zones’ featuring different types of farming with lots of hands-on activities for the children to try. Around 1500 primary school children attended the event from schools all over Devon.
The College was asked to organise and run the ‘Fruit Zone’ at the event. There were 9 activities ranging from lemonade and jam making to smoothie bikes and a map activity to show children where fruit is grown around the world. The College activities were run by the students on Level 2 and 3 Animal Care and Horticulture. The students engaged enthusiastically with the children at the event, working brilliantly as a team to ensure that each activity worked well. This was a great opportunity for our students to work on their communication skills and it was wonderful to see them working so confidently in a very busy environment.
