South Devon High School celebrated a landmark occasion today as pupils from the first ever cohort collected their GCSE results. The pupils worked very hard to achieve an exceptional 98% overall pass rate.
There were numerous success stories throughout as pupils excelled over a range of core subject areas, including English, Maths and Science, alongside a personalised choice of specialist technical qualifications. They can now look forward to beginning the next stage of their chosen path, with their GCSE results forming the foundation for further success and a gateway to further education.
Maddy Smith, 16 from Kingskerswell
Maddy achieved straight A grades including 4 A* and 5 A grades in all of her GCSEs, she said, “I’m really surprised and pleased with my results. The small class sizes and support from the staff at the High School helped me to excel and achieve the grades I wanted.” Maddy will be moving on to study her A Levels at Torquay Girls Grammar School and hopes to progress to University and pursue a career as a nurse.
Chloe Chapman, 16 from Paignton
Chloe has worked extremely hard all year to achieve excellent results in her GCSEs and has reached her goal of being accepted to study A Levels at South Devon College. She achieved 9 GCSEs, 8 of which were A and B grades. Chloe currently volunteers for a local radio station and has high aspirations of progressing to university and is aiming for a career in the film and media industry. “I am extremely happy with my results, I achieved all of my GCSEs at C and above. The teachers and staff have been very supportive in helping me achieve my GCSEs and I am looking forward to continuing my studies at South Devon College.”
Luke Viner, 16 from Paignton
Luke has excelled during his time at South Devon High School and is extremely proud of his achievements having gained 9 GCSEs, including 7 at A and B grades. Luke relocated to South Devon from Milton Keynes and is aiming for a career in medicine as an Anaesthetist. “I am so happy that I made the choice to come to South Devon High School. I have been able to set myself a clear career pathway and goal. I really can’t wait to start my A Levels in Biology, Maths, Chemistry and English at South Devon College.”
Jasmine Northcott, 16 from Paignton
Jasmine really thrived at the South Devon High School and within the college environment. Jasmine decided to come to the High School to focus on her studies and achieve her full potential. She made every effort to access all the support available and would attend the supported study sessions after school on a weekly basis. It is clear that all the hard work paid off, Jasmine achieved high grades in all of her GCSEs. Jasmine said, “I am so happy with my results and could not have done it without the support of the teachers within the High School. The small class sizes and support available have really helped me achieve my goals. I can’t wait to start my A Levels here at the College.”

Based at the South Devon College Vantage Point Campus in Paignton, South Devon High School will be moving to a brand new facility from September 2016. The exclusive area will feature new, purpose built classrooms and study areas fitted with the latest equipment and technology to engage, support and encourage pupils with their learning journey. A key feature of the curriculum at South Devon High School is facilitating smaller class sizes, with a strong emphasis on providing excellent support, including an after school study club.
South Devon High School is committed to giving young people the best chance to succeed by combining academic and technical qualifications and providing progression opportunities into further and higher education. The College has strong links with Plymouth University and a wide range of local and regional employers. With a strong focus on employability, young people are able to develop the necessary skills valued by employers to prepare them for a successful future. Pupils will work with state of the art, industry standard, equipment and resources.
One pupil said, “Coming to South Devon High School has proved to be the best option for me. I’m shown respect and I’m treated like a young adult. It has been great overall.”
