25th August 2016

Students of all ages were celebrating their GCSE results this week, as South Devon College enjoyed another year of success. Many students achieved their goals and improved their grades to progress in the next stage of their personal journey.

.

The College offers a range of GCSE provision, catering to students of all backgrounds and abilities. Many young people worked hard to achieve the desired C grade in English and Maths, improving on previous school achievements. Whilst others were completing a programme of 5 GCSEs in order to improve their previous grades and progress to A Levels, technical and professional qualifications or apprenticeships.  The results also brought new opportunities for adults who had returned to education to retake some of their GCSEs to progress on to an access or university course, to reskill or improve their employability.

Nathanael Hunt-Crabtree, 29, from Paignton

Nathanael enrolled on an Access to Higher Education course at South Devon College and passed his English and Maths exams. Nathanael said, “I feel amazing, South Devon College is very good- the best college I’ve been to.” After completing the Access course Nathanael can now progress to Plymouth University to study Psychology and Biology.

.

Kerri Crowley, 41, originally from USA- now based in Torquay

Kerri worked very hard to achieve an A* in her English GCSE and a C in her Maths GCSE through an Access course. Kerri said, “I feel very relieved, I received excellent advice and support from my tutors. I’m excited to start the History with English foundation degree at the South Devon College University Centre in September.”

.

Natalie Dunn, 26 from Brixham

Natalie was extremely surprised when she discovered she had passed her GCSE in English with an A grade. She can now progress to Plymouth University to study and pursue a career in Optometry. Natalie said, “I’m so shocked, I didn’t know what to expect. I’m very pleased with my result.”

Thomas Rainey, 17 from Torquay

Thomas was over the moon with his C grade in Higher Maths, he said “I love South Devon College, it provides a great learning environment and the tutors are really supportive. I feel amazing right now.” For his next move, he is looking at studying Illustration or Graphic Design, although he has a passion for Quantum Physics too.

.

Jessica Ramsdall, 16, Paignton

Jessica studied a range of GCSEs and achieved a grade C or higher in each of them. She will now progress to study A Levels at South Devon College with a long term goal of attending university to pursue a career as a Child Psychologist. She said, “I’m so happy, I was not expecting to achieve such great results!”

.

Joseph Beech, 19, Brixham

Joseph was determined to pass his English GCSE and was overwhelmed when he discovered he had gained a C. Joseph currently works at Landmark and having gained a C in English can now progress to an apprenticeship in Team Leading and Management at South Devon College, with the aspiration to become a manager within the Landscaping industry. Joseph said, “I feel so proud of my result, you are treated as an adult at the College and it is a great environment to learn in.”

.

Matthew Harbour, Vice Principal of Curriculum, Performance and Quality at South Devon College said,

“It is excellent to see another successful year of GCSE achievement at South Devon College. We’re delighted to see students progressing within the College in further and higher education, including an increasing number of students choosing an apprenticeship. For those students who are moving into employment and higher education further afield, we wish them a bright future. Well done to all students and staff who have worked hard for these great results.”
