28th June 2016
Saturday 25th June saw the annual South Devon College Marine Academy activity day. The activities were based at Premier, Noss-on-Dart Marina.
The day promised fine weather and a host of interactive activities designed and led by the expert Marine Academy staff, all specialists in their own area of the marine industry. The event was also supported by students who are studying at the Marine Academy; they were responsible for supervising the onshore activities and driving the boats which enabled members of the public to experience a boat trip on the magnificent River Dart.
One of the big attractions of the day was the addition of a wind farm transfer boat, provided by Offshore Turbine Services (OTS); a local company whose ethos is transferring crew members from land to offshore wind farms in an environmentally friendly way. The 60 foot catamaran with twin jet drives is capable of reaching 20 knots. The public were able to experience this commercial boat in action and for some the opportunity to helm the vessel.
The South Devon College Marine Academy is currently training people in Marine Engineering, Boat Building and Seamanship, at a range of levels from Level 1 to Foundation Degree. There are also two new exciting apprenticeship qualifications, the SQA Marina and Boatyards and the SQA Workboat, which give students the opportunity to earn whilst they learn.
All of the qualifications available at the South Devon College Marine Academy are industry driven and enable individuals to gain industry recognised vocational and national governing body qualifications. The experience gained will allow individuals to prosper in the marine industry.
If you have any questions about careers in the marine sector or if you would like to discuss a career pathway, please contact Andy Wright, Programme Coordinator on [email protected] or call 01803 839242. We will be recruiting for September starts throughout the summer.
