The team from SOUTH DEVON COLLEGE’s Noss Marine Academy are celebrating after winning the ‘Training and Development Award for under 10 employees’ at the British Marine Awards 2016.
Now in its third year, with the largest number of entries to date, the Awards ceremony took place during an exclusive Black Tie Dinner underneath the legendary 19th century sailing ship, Cutty Sark, which has been moored in Greenwich since 1954.
Noss Marine Academy is recognised as a centre of excellence for water based education, maritime, boat building and marine engineering training. The Academy, located on the banks of the River Dart, is ensuring that marine knowledge and skills are available in Torbay and the wider area. The strong connections to local marine businesses ensure the training offer serves the needs of the businesses as well as students, supporting growth in this vital sector.
The success of the Academy has impacted on the growth of the business that now offers training and development for over 250 learners a year. Marine training is now offered at all levels; 14/16, 16/18, 19 & Adults, Apprenticeships, Higher Skills & Education and Commercially Endorsed Programmes. This growth is a direct result of employing highly motivated and dedicated staff who are passionate about the Marine industry.
The award was given by the judges who took note of its strong Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme and how staff are encouraged to contribute to external working groups, including associations and sector advisory groups. There is also clear evidence of a culture which fosters continued personal development at the College, which is reflected thorough the success of the training delivered.
Steve Caunter, Assistant Principal at South Devon College, said “It is an honour to accept this prestigious award for training and development. These awards are a true reflection of the hard work and dedication of our talented staff, and the huge contribution they have made that has led to this tremendous achievement. We are thrilled to receive this recognition for our workplace practices; we work hard at Noss Marine Academy to provide the kind of culture that will foster growth, learning, and excellence. We believe that if our employees are happy with and enjoy their jobs, company success and learner’s achievement will be inevitable.”
